Girls on the Run of Greater Kalamazoo is a positive youth development program for girls in 3rth through 5thgrades. The 10 week curriculum incorporates running as one of the tools to develop life skills. Girls on the Run inspires girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained volunteers lead groups of 8-15 girls through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and games allowing girls to develop essential life skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness.
A recent independent study led by Dr. Maureen Weiss, an expert in Positive Youth Development, found that Girls on the Run's intentional life skills curriculum and highly trained volunteers positively impact girls' lives by helping them increase their self-confidence, develop healthy relationships, and feel good about themselves. Each participant is also part of a community service project that is developed and implemented by the participants themselves.
Since 2002, more than 29,000 girls have been a part of the transformational program. This spring we expect 1,500 girls to be a part of a GOTR team in the greater Kalamazoo area. We have never turned away a girl for inability to pay the $165 program registration fee. We rely on generous individual donors, corporate sponsors, special events and grants to allow every girl to participate.
